This 2006 untitled oil on canvas by celebrated Bangladeshi master Shahabuddin Ahmed displays his signature blend of dynamic motion, muscular expressionism, and dramatic spatial tension. Typical of his powerful visual language, the canvas features a striking contrast between expansive negative space and an intensely agitated, low-lying compositional form.
The top two-thirds of the horizontal composition is dominated by a vast, tranquil off-white sky, which creates a quiet background against the turbulent action below. Sweeping across the bottom horizon is a mass of vigorous, gestural brushstrokes in earthy tones of warm terracotta, olive green, ochre, charcoal, and flashes of stark white.
Shahabuddin's loose, kinetic paint application creates a palpable sense of speed, energy, and physical momentum. The forms near the lower border dissolve into abstract, churning swirls of impasto, evoking a prone figure lunging forward, a surging landform, or a body breaking through elemental forces. His signature brushwork—raw, rhythmic, and full of kinetic thrust—captures the spirit of endurance, vigor, and freedom. Signed by the artist at the lower right, the piece brilliantly leverages minimal figuration and maximum gestural velocity to deliver a visceral emotional charge within a compact frame.

Mrs Mayor was walked into the art world by the legendary modernist Bimal Das Gupta, one of whose biggest collections remains with Gallery Silver Scapes. In the 1980s, as head and first curator of the Habiart Gallery founded by Mrs Rekha Modi — a childhood friend — Mrs Mayor worked closely with and curated shows for renowned artists such as A Ramachandran, GR Santosh, Rameshwar Broota, Sakti Burman, MK Bardhan, Dhiraj Chaudhury, M Sivanesan, and Arup Das among others.
Besides modern masters, she also worked with young contemporaries such as Sudip Roy, Paresh Maity, Subroto Kundu, Vinod Sharma, and many more. Artworks commissioned by her are now part of prestigious collections, such as those of the India Habitat Centre, Ranbaxy, Pepsi, Hotel Lalit, Bank of America, and many more private and public collections.
